Meet one of the UK's leading tomato growers

Location: West Sussex
Produce: Tomatoes

Chris Wall’s family-run business is one of the UK’s leading growers of tomatoes, producing five million kgs of top quality vine tomatoes for supermarkets a year.

Six varieties of tomatoes are grown within 10.5 hectares of glasshouses and include types such as Elegance, Sunstream, Sophie-Jane, Arlinta, Ruby Jewel and Promoso. The farm based in Barnham is looked after by Chris’s 150 employees.

Tomato seeds are sown in late October/early November and arrive on the nursery just before Christmas. The first picks are in early March and this carries on through till November when the plants are removed and the process starts again.

Chris uses predatory insects to control pests from destroying his tomato plants. The farm has hundreds of bee hives in the tomato crops for pollination as well as a number of ‘bee hotels’ outside.

Over the last decade Chris and his team have reduced their environmental impact through energy efficient boilers, thermal screens and more sustainable water management. Rainwater is collected from the glasshouse roofs and put into their on-site reservoir and used to water the tomato crops. The reservoir has also become a thriving wildlife habitat.

Chris is also committed to reducing waste wherever possible. The leaf waste from the tomato plants is composted to use in the soil of future tomato crops and lasts for a number of seasons.

Did you know?

Tomatoes are best stored at room temperature in a fruit bowl rather than in the fridge because refrigeration alters their natural ripening.

Recently managed to find Chris Wall’s Caramello Trixia tomatoes.....these taste just as I remember tomatoes used to when I was a child. This variety is superb and subject to availability I would always purchase these, but have only found them at Sainsbury’s......I should state that I am not a fan of tomatoes because they generally do not taste of anything, however the caramello is wonderful and we fight over the last one. That’s a first for me... Thank you for bringing tomatoes back into my life.

We love plum tomatoes and tried your Ruby Jewel medium size variety from Saintsbury's for the first time 6 weeks ago. Gorgeous on their own as well as with mozzarella cheese and balsamic vinegar. Keep them coming :)'

I first bought your tomatoes some years ago in Sainsbury's, then all of a sudden they disappeared. I later discovered them in Waitrose, and now they are back in Sainsbury's. I buy them for salads and buy whatever variety from Chris Wall or don't bother. No other tomatoes measure up.

Been eating Chris Wall tomatoes from Sainsburys for sometime and they really are good. Live about four miles from the greenhouses and its great to be able to support a good local company who also have good environmental policies.

Hello Chris: your Ruby Jewel tomatoes are the best I've tasted in years and I buy them regularly in my local Sainsburys. Many thanks and well done!

I have bought hundreds of your Sundream tomatoes from Sainsbury. They are always firm, sweet, and great for any recipe or salad. I always wondered how you were able to grow all year and just looked at your website. Its brilliant to see your growing ethos and I look forward to many hundreds more tomatoes ! Thank you

Lovely family pack tomatoes nice a d jui y, used to but cherry but will buy these now, more flavour! I know it is mixed but what is the name of these tomatoes, please. Keep up the good work and using rainwater is easier and probably produces the flavoursome Tom's.

I recently bought some tomatoes in Sainsbury's. Not only did they taste like tomatoes, the smell of tomatoes was like walking into a greenhouse, rather than just opening the fridge door! So I wanted to say thank you to the grower, Chris Wall. Fantastic. Best tomatoes I have tasted in a long time.

We purchase your Sweet Full Flavoured classic vine tomatoes from Waitrose, Ponteland. These, without doubt, were the best flavoured tomatoes we have ever purchased from a retailer. Almost as good as those picked from the vine, in the sun and eaten without delay. Congratulations we will keep our eyes open for CHRIS WALL's products Allan & Barbara Russell

Mr Wall I am great lover of your tomatoes and am totally frustrated with Sainsbury's who seem unable to stock your product but have a never ending supply of tomatoes from the Netherlands. I actually have complained to their Head Office, who did assure me that "British is Best" and even today only the small tomatoes are in stock. I even spoke to the Manager who could not really give a satisfactory answer. Do you have one?

Anthony Ridler - 25/07/2018 12:50:44

Back British Farming - YES . Today , my wife and a couple of other ladies were searching Sainsbury's counter for British tomatoes. Dutch tomatoes were prominent but the ladies were finding it difficult to pick out British . Chris Wall's tomatoes were found , but how much easier it would have been with a Union Jack on the packaging. Shoppers look for the flag. Rgds

Hello Chris, If you continue to grow the Ruby Jewel, my daughter and I will continue to eat tomatoes. This is what tomatoes should taste like, as they once did. What a find in Sainsburys. Thank you and the best of British to you.

There are different ways to fry tomatoes, but each of them will require cook to spend several hours in the kitchen, so this dish is usually better correct do on weekends or for special occasions. When tomatoes are roasted, they get a deep taste and are combined with seafood, antipasto and other roasted vegetables. Moreover, they are perfectly suitable for use in the baking industry, in making bread or cake with custard.

Chris Walls tomatoes are delicious, I have just eaten one bought from Waitrose, sweet and delicious.

M. Pennycuick - 29/05/2018 15:17:44

Your tomatoes are lovely. I love the smell when you open the pack. British farming should be promoted more.

Charles Arscott - 14/05/2018 12:24:33

Hello Chris, we have bought a couple of family pack tomatoes produced by you. We think they are first class - dare I say tasting just like they did in times past! Well done.

Virginia Wedgwood - 19/04/2018 12:54:51

Your tomatoes sold by Sainsburys in a family pack are really excellent. Unlike most tomatoes at a 'good value' price, they are full flavour, not too large and last well. I'm delighted to have found them! Thank you
