Recipe

Blackberry, apple and pear crumble cake with sticky toffee sauce

Pretty and seasonal, packed with pears, apples and blackberries, topped with a thick layer of oat crumble and filled with lashings of cream cheese buttercream. Drizzle with salted caramel and a sprinkle of blackberries and this autumnal cake will make the perfect pudding for a harvest supper. I made my two sponges in 8-inch cake tins, but this would also be lovely made in a traybake tin and then cut into squares, says Miranda Gore Browne

Latest Edition

Well, just like that, the festive season is upon us once more. Christmas can pass us by in a bit of a blur – with present buying, carol services and social events – but I hope you also carve out some time to relax, recharge and take stock. And, of course, watch plenty of repeats of ‘Only Fools and Horses’ and ‘Dad’s Army’.

For our part, cookery writer Miranda Gore Browne has a full collection of festive recipes, including a turkey dinner and a wonderful Christmas cake (pictured on our December cover). We also look at why it’s important to support our turkey farmers at this time of year and, on pages 31-36, showcase a host of rural businesses who have diversified to take advantage of all things wintry and festive.

Also in this edition, Clare Hunt reflects on the annual, some might say forlorn, pastime of hoping for a white Christmas. Bing Crosby might have dreamed of one, but the snow-laden scenes on our Christmas cards are, sadly, rarely seen. That doesn’t stop us hoping for snow – deep and crisp and even – although the reality might be slightly more damp, mild and grey.

This month, we also have a rather charming interview with actor and presenter Robson Green to mark his new series, ‘World’s Most Amazing Walks’. From tearaway squaddie in ‘Soldier Soldier’ and chart-topping crooner with Robson & Jerome to something approaching a national treasure as he finishes his 11th series of ‘Grantchester’, it feels like he’s been an ever-present on our TV screens for the past three-and-a-half decades. He speaks movingly of his love for the Northumbrian landscape and how nature and walking have been a grounding force in his life.
