Get inspired by winter produce

We all think of winter being a barren time for farmers and gardeners but perhaps we should think again. As part of the NFU’s Back British Farming campaign the produce flag has been updated to showcase winter produce and highlight the variety of fruit and vegetables in season over the winter months. All of the food in the flag can be found in supermarkets now.

The flag incorporates the intense greens from the brassica family and earthy root vegetables including celeriac, parsnips and turnips. In addition the seasonal stalwarts add a splash of colour including apples, tomatoes, beetroot and carrots.

After the riches of the Christmas larder, January can be a challenging time for cooks with inspiration lacking in the dark days. The produce flag highlights just how many fruits and vegetables are in season and at their best, it’s time to let our winter vegetables take centre stage in soups and casseroles.

Comment: Thank you for the calendar. I always buy British as far as possible. I noted this morning that Sainsburys had put up the price of Bread by 10p, but does this mean the price of cerals has gone up and does the grower get the money, bananas by 10p, the milk went up a couple of weeks ago, I do hope the farmer gets the money, milk is very cheap.
