Dear

Releasing sky lanterns (also commonly referred to as ‘Chinese lanterns’) into the environment may appear an impressive sight; however people need to realise how dangerous they can be.

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has been lobbying government for a ban on the sale of sky lanterns because of the risks they pose. Sky lanterns are unpredictable as you cannot control where they land. They have caused fires on an industrial scale, destroy acres of crops and kill or injure farm animals. Furthermore, they cause a significant and increasing litter problem and they have been mistaken for distress flares.

The NFU has supported Councils introducing a voluntary ban on releasing sky lanterns from any public open spaces that are owned by the Council or which are the responsibility of the Council.

I have been encouraged to see other Councils putting such bans in place on its land and large retailers taking action. I would urge you to follow their lead.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely
