Anthem with a piggy twist sought for new campaign

24 Feb 2011
pigs suckling ‘From Rasher with Love’, ‘Twist and Snout’ and ‘Whole ‘Trotta’ Love’ are among early anthem suggestions for the Pigs Are Still Worth It? campaign.

This campaign is designed to win a fair deal for British pig farmers from supermarkets and the meat processing industry in the face of rocketing feed prices, according to a spokesperson for the initiative’s organisers.

Now, pig farmers’ leaders are seeking suggestions for a song title, together with lyrics if people want, for a campaign anthem. The winning song will be chosen from nominations and performed at a pig farmers’ rally in Westminster on 3 March.

Barney Kay, of the National Pig Association, said ‘Stand by Your Ham’ – the anthem of the British pig farmers’ 2008 campaign for a price increase – caught people’s imagination. It helped them understand that British pig farming was worth saving, he said.

‘Now we are looking for another anthem to do the same. The situation is, if anything, worse than in 2008 as feed prices look set to stay high for the foreseeable future.

‘Most farmers are currently losing around £20 per pig produced and many face the prospect of going out of business,’ Mr Kay warned.

‘We are calling on supermarkets and processers to pass a fair price back down the chain. And we’re asking consumers to show their support by continuing to buy high welfare, Red Tractor pork, sausages, bacon and ham.’

Suggestions for a new pork campaign anthem can be posted at any of the following locations: the National Pig Association's website, BPEX, Love Pork and Facebook.
