A bright spark amid the gloom

13 Oct 2011
Unemployment at a 17-year high, economic growth at 0.1 per cent and families facing a £2,000 drop in incomes – all in all, 2011 has been a pretty miserable year.

Ascot-SuitBut now the NFU Countryside magazine has teamed up with clothing retailer Brocklehursts of Bakewell to offer a lucky reader the shopping spree of their dreams – a £1,000 bespoke shopping experience at the popular rural retailer.

Readers can nominate themselves, a friend or relative – with the fantastic prize going to the most deserving individual.

Martin Stanhope, NFU Countryside editor said: “As predicted, 2011 was a challenging year, and it’s certainly lived down to expectations – with rising fuel costs, high inflation and falling incomes.

“As a way of helping those in rural areas who face a hard winter, we wanted to give one lucky individual some really good news.

“We’re really pleased to be working with Brocklehursts and hope the competition will help someone look great and stay warm for years to come – and it will be just in time for Christmas too.”

According to a survey carried out by Countryside earlier this year, nearly eight out of ten rural folk said they were worried about rising fuel costs, with nearly half – 49 per cent - vowing to cut down on journeys.

Martin Brocklehurst, from the family owned clothing retailer, said he was looking forward to providing the winner with their bespoke outfit.

"With our strong association with the countryside and those that live there, we are delighted to be involved with this initiative,” he said.

"It will be great to welcome the winner to our store and give them a real tailor-made experience."

The competition is open to men or women regardless of age, and closes on Friday, October 28. To enter simply pick up a copy of the Countryside magazine.
